Historical Inflation Trends
Are you concerned about the rising cost of living and
doing business? Will future inflation continue to be
consistent with the moderate historical inflation trend
that began in the mid eighties?
The U. S. experienced a similarly moderate period of
inflation from 1952 through 1967. That period was
followed by a period of rapid inflation. Inflation has
behaved with considerably less volatility after 1950.
In the chart below, historical stock prices and interest
rates are plotted above Historical Inflation to provide a
more complete sense of economic history.
Noteworthy historical events are also shown to clarify
the nature of the times. The negative percentages
(inflation) represent periods of falling prices (deflation).
The severe deflation following the economic collapse of
the great depression is visible. The extreme inflation
during World War II is also apparent.
